Who’s Who of Huber Heights-Wayne Township?

I was born on September 8, 1828

 

I was born on a farm in Taylorsville, Wayne Township, Ohio

 

I graduated West Point in 1852

 

I was a Colonel in the 36th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

 

I was promoted to Brigadier General in 1862

 

I became a life-long friend to Rutherford B. Hayes

 

I commanded in these Civil War Battles

South Mountain

Antietam

Chickamauga

Battle of Appomattox Court House

 

I was promoted to Major General in 1864

 

I was in the room when Lee surrendered to Grant

 

I was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to command the Arizona Territory

 

I fought in the Great Sioux War of 1875-1882

 

I was instrumental in the capture of Geronimo

 

I was one of three commanders set out to fight the Sioux at the Little Big Horn

 

I fought at the Battle of Rosebud and was turned back causing General Custer to have less reinforcements at the Little Big Horn River

 

I spent my later years speaking out against the unjust treatment of the Indians

 

I died suddenly in Chicago on March 21, 1891 at the

age of 61

 

I am buried at Arlington National Cemetery

 

My parents are buried in the Bethel Church Cemetery on Old Troy Pike

 

I am known as one of the greatest Indian fighters of our time

 

I was portrayed in the TV series” Deadwood “by Peter Coyote and by Gene Hackman in the 1993 movie “Geronimo: An American legend”
